Orange Vendor Problem

The Orange Vendor Problem is as follows :

Question :

After selling 35% of the oranges, a fruit vendor has 260 oranges left. How many did he have originally ?

a). 390

b). 520

c). 400

d). 300

Solution :

This may take like 15 seconds at max :) Ok look, he has sold 35% of his oranges and has 260 left. That means that 260 oranges is (100 – 35) = 65% of the total lot. So now if you do a simple cross multiplication, you’ll get :

Oranges                               Percentage

260                    ——                65%

?                      ——              100%

So cross multiplying we get

260 X 100 = 65 X x

x = (260 X 100) /65 = 400 :)

Hence the total number of oranges that the vendor originally had was 400 :)

Hence answer is (c) 400

Ram Shyam Business Problem

The Ram Shyam Business Problem goes like this :

Question :

Ram starts a business investing Rs.60000. After 3 months, Shyam joined him investing Rs.75000. Find the ratio of Profit shared after a year.

a). 16 : 15

b). 4 : 5

c). 3 : 5

d). 11 :15

Solution :

This should take 10 seconds at max. Forget the thousands. Just take 60 rs for 12 months and 75 Rs for (12 – 3) = 9 months.

So that is (60 X 12 ) : (75 X 9)

= 720 : 675

Divide by 45 ( Common factor)

= 16 : 15 .

Hence the correct option is a). 16 : 15   :)
