Orange Vendor Problem

The Orange Vendor Problem is as follows :

Question :

After selling 35% of the oranges, a fruit vendor has 260 oranges left. How many did he have originally ?

a). 390

b). 520

c). 400

d). 300

Solution :

This may take like 15 seconds at max :) Ok look, he has sold 35% of his oranges and has 260 left. That means that 260 oranges is (100 – 35) = 65% of the total lot. So now if you do a simple cross multiplication, you’ll get :

Oranges                               Percentage

260                    ——                65%

?                      ——              100%

So cross multiplying we get

260 X 100 = 65 X x

x = (260 X 100) /65 = 400 :)

Hence the total number of oranges that the vendor originally had was 400 :)

Hence answer is (c) 400

Ram Shyam Business Problem

The Ram Shyam Business Problem goes like this :

Question :

Ram starts a business investing Rs.60000. After 3 months, Shyam joined him investing Rs.75000. Find the ratio of Profit shared after a year.

a). 16 : 15

b). 4 : 5

c). 3 : 5

d). 11 :15

Solution :

This should take 10 seconds at max. Forget the thousands. Just take 60 rs for 12 months and 75 Rs for (12 – 3) = 9 months.

So that is (60 X 12 ) : (75 X 9)

= 720 : 675

Divide by 45 ( Common factor)

= 16 : 15 .

Hence the correct option is a). 16 : 15   :)

Understood ? :) If you have a question, you can post it on the forums and Ill gladly solve it for you :)

Rotten Apples Problem

So the Rotten Apples Problem goes like this :

Question :

A box containing a dozen apples is opened and a few of the apples are found to be rotten. Which of the following may be the ratio of fresh apples to rotten apples ?

a). 4 : 7

b). 3: 1

c). 5 : 3

d).3 : 2

Solution :

This problem should take you five seconds. Not more :)

Understand this : In Ratio problems like these, add all the ratios and see if it adds up to the total number or any of the factors of the total number. Here the total number is 12(because a dozen of apples)

See option a) … 4 + 7 = 11 …11 is not a factor of 12.

Similarly even c) and d) will fail. But option b) .. 3+1 = 4 which is a factor of 12 :) Hence b)3 : 1 is the right answer :)
