Hey Kumar This is a really good problem Im not really sure if my solution is right But this is what I think

Alright so Pipe A takes 16 min to fill a tank. Now Pipe B and C have cross sectional circumferences in ratios 2:3 .. Circumferences means 2*pi*r  .
However when talking about pipes, we are interested in flow per unit area. Meaning the AREA is important for us. So since we know that
Area = pi*r*r , we will have to square the ratios to get the actual area ratios. Hence in terms of Area, B and C have cross sectional areas in the ratio 4 :9 .

But they've given that A has a one third circumference of C. So the ratio can be 1:3 ...Now combining all these statements we can say that the

Ratios of Circumference of A: B :C = 1 : 2 : 3

AND Ratios of Area of A : B : C = 1 :4 :9

So that means Pipe B fills tank 1,  4 times faster than Pipe A &
Pipe C fills tank 1, 9 times faster than Pipe A.

Now coming to the 2nd tank... we know that Since its twice as big as the first, A will take 32 min to fill this tank right ?

So every min, Pipe A would have to do  (1/32) of the work

But Pipe B and Pipe C will together do the work 13 ( 4 + 9) times faster than Pipe A.

So every minute, Pipe B and C do 13 * ( 1/32) = 13/32 of the work.

So basically if we Invert this by "RULE of FLIP", then we know that Pipe B & C will take (32/13) mins or Just under 2.5 mins to fill the tank together

Once again, Im not really sure of this solution But Im pretty sure this is the way to approach this problem

Hopefully we can discuss this a little further and find whether the solution is right or no

Hello This sum should take you no more than 5 seconds if you see the Magic with the numbers

The ratio increases from 5:6 to 6:7 .. means one on each side... In this case, how much time is past gives us the answer.

See, after 7 years, ratio increases from 5:6 to 6:7, means each 1 part of the ratio is 7 years itself!

Hence X's age is 6 X 7 = 42

Ok so this is how you solve it

If pipe A fills the tank in 10 mins, means every minute it fills (1/10)th of the tank
If pipe B empties the tank in 6 mins, means every minute it empties (1/6)th of the tank

So if both the pipes are on, the net work done every minute is (1/10) - (1/6) = (6-10)/60 = -4/60 = -1/15

So now -1/15 is getting emptied every min that the two pipes are open

Consider this : Your tank is 2/5 full   Since its a fraction, we can multiply the same number in the numerator and denominator without changing the value right ?

Multiply 3 on top and below
So (2 X 3)/(5 X 3) = 6/15

So now since the part of the tank with water is 6/15 and the net work of pipes A & B is -1/15 ......

The pipes will empty the tank in 6 mins

Hence the correct answer is (a) 6 min to empty

The Xavier Aptitude Test (XAT) is a national level aptitude test conducted in India by XLRI (formerly known as Xavier Labour Relations Institute), a business school in Jamshedpur in the state of Jharkhand in India, as an entrance test for its and other highly reputed institutes, including Xavier Institute of Management and Goa Institute of Management programmes.

XLRI Jamshedpur has about 240 seats in its flagship BM (Business Management) and PMIR (Personnel Management and Industrial Relations) programmes and 120 seats in its flagship 15 months full-time residential GMP (General Management Program). The PMIR program has been renamed HRM (Human Resource Management). Apart from XLRI, 60 other institutes accept XAT scores for selection of candidates to their respective programmes. About 1,03,427 students appeared for the XAT exam in 2010. Candidates were surprised to note differential marking (1 marks to 5 marks) in XAT 2011 (Maximum Marks:252). The paper was very difficult compared to all other Management Entrance Exams

The Common Admission Test (CAT) is a computer based test held in India. This test scores a person on the bases of quantitative ability, data interpretation, verbal ability and logical reasoning. The Indian Institutes of Management (IIMs) started this exam and use the test for selecting students for their business administration programs.[3] The test is conducted every year by one of the IIM's based on a policy of rotation

The CAT 2013 will have only two sections. The first section is Quantitative Ability & Data Interpretation; the second section is Verbal Ability & Logical Reasoning. These two sections will be implemented sequentially with separate time limits. The examination will be 140 minutes.

Three scaled scores will be presented for each candidate: an overall scaled score and two separate scaled scores for each section. As the two sections evaluate distinct sets of knowledge and skills, scores do not correlate across... sections. A high score in one section does not guarantee a high score in another section. Percentile rankings are provided for each individual section as well as for the overall exam score
